Project Overview

An independent project where I have to follow the requirement of makeing a game that revolve around concept of explosion or implosion. I decided to go with both concept in a movement shooter game because I wanted to explore the genre more.

The 3 pillars of this game is keep player shooting while moving, make player keep killing in style and lastly, explosion should play an important role.


Challenges

Since I'm not familiar with the adjustment of movement shooter controller the main challenge here is to make the controller feels right and design the challenge that will not overwhelm player when they are in first person perspective.


Solution

I spend hours to make sure that the movement and camera turning feels good and I decided to tell player about threads that are incoming by sound. I know that sound isn't enough so I give player ability to heal themselves to reduce the frustration of getting hit and make them think that getting hit is okay since it will not reduce the combo meter. In result the game encourage player to take bold step and brawl with enemy to keep the killing streaks going.


What have I learned?

- Balancing reward and frustration. Due to limitation of player noticing enemies attack, I decided to reward player a bit more to ease the frustration which result to encourage player to not avoid too much danger and feel the fun of brawling with horde of enemies.

- Making movement shooter controller feel good. I have learned many aspects that make this kind of fps movement feels good such as camera movement speed, field of view, movement speed and etc.
